MY LITTLE PONY: Live-Action Trailer (What did you think?)

Secret Sauce sent us this personally on Twitter so I feel obligated to post it even though it’s kinda weak. There are a few cute parts and it definitely had some potential but I was really hoping to laugh out loud and the most I did was smile once. I actually rolled my eyes a few times which is never a good sign. My literal first thought after seeing this was “weak sauce” so perhaps putting sauce in their name was a poor idea on their part.

Rise of the Buttercup Sprinkles? I mean, if you are going to take the time to make a whole video, you can’t just take the time to Google an actual MLP name? Jamie Oliver did! And it was too long. It would have been a cute gag at half the length but after seeing the same Photoshopped colored horse gag several times I felt like we were beating a dead horse. Or pony.

I think it probably meant to be funny to people who have never really heard of My Little Pony before as it is mostly a bunch of spray painted horses which impeded my enjoyment of the video. As a long time horsewoman, this actually totally upset me for some reason because all I could think of was that I hoped they used something that would be safe for the poor horses and whether it would give them a rash. I imagine this hang-up is mine and mine alone because of my years doing horse health care and I am willing to acknowledge that.

But, hey, it is hard to make a video and comedy is never easy and very subjective, I definitely understand that. They obviously put a lot of work into it and it was a good effort and shows some potential for future videos. I am giving them the benefit of the doubt and posting it either way because I think it was a bold idea for them to try even if it wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be.

That said, did you enjoy the trailer? What did you like or not like about it?

Better yet, what would you have put into a Live Action MLP movie trailer? Someone want to make one?

As for me, I still prefer Robot Chicken’s Apocalypse Pony.

Hillary got her very first pony in 1983 and has been hooked ever since! When she isn’t obsessing about ponies, she can be found all over the internet as she writes for quite a few blogs. Hillary is also a playwright, fiction and non-fiction writer as well as the author of the first and only price guide to She-Ra collectibles.

I laughed so hard last night when I saw it. Obviously it is good satire. it’s not making fun of MLP per se, it is making fun of Michael Bay movies, Transformers in particular. They just took another iconic 80’s franchise.

As a MLP fan I’ve seen the fun side of it. I don’t like taking myself too seriously and this trailer is pretty much harmless, they show their true intentions from the very beginning. So, please, don’t get too upset.

I am not sure I would like to see a MLP real action film, mainly because I don’t think they could pull it off. But I’d love to see more animation movies, a new TV series… There are lots of stories to tell…

See, the problem isn’t that I’m upset. I’m bummed it wasn’t better. I love a good MLP parody. I was really hoping this would be hysterical. I’ve watched a lot of Micheal Bay movies but I still didn’t find it that funny. Maybe I have just become jaded or something by all the other stuff on the internet and I expect too much. I guess I have become a comedy diva. Someone says Live Action MLP movie and I can think of 5 billion gags for that trailer so when they couldn’t even make me chuckle I was like, meh.

I think you hit it right on the head. They were taking themselves way too seriously with this and almost forgot to make it funny. Or, at least, that was what it was like to me. My Little Pony doesn’t even take itself seriously so it just seemed like they didn’t know enough about the source material to effectively parody it. It’s not their fault, I know they put a lot of work into it, I just thought it was a bit weak.

I wanted a violent MLP rainbow carnage of death and magical fairy dust type comedy video and all they gave me with Wizard of Oz colored horses and that was it! I wanted something like the classic Cute Has Learned to Kill like the Bean Bunny (Bean-bo) video from the Muppets.

Oh well. I am still holding out that someone will take this idea and make something really hysterical with it. I guess I just need to lower my standards for internet videos, but I have been spoiled by some hilarity, darn it!
