G2. Let’s talk about them.

Saturday, July 17th, at the 2010 My Little Pony Convention, Summer Hayes is going to release her new guide to this unusual generation. What does this mean for you, the average MLP collector or seller? Simple.

G2s haven’t been as collectible as other generations in the past for one main reason: Very few people knew much about them. Most US collectors have never even seen the G2 items that were available only in Europe and even European collectors missed out on some of the smaller and harder to find sets. What it boils down to is this: lots of people didn’t collect this generation because they had no idea where to begin or even what was really in it. The info was incomplete and scattered. Until now.

Starting tomorrow, the general MLP collecting public is going to go from knowing a little bit about the second generation to knowing a whole lot about the second generation. Instead of only a few devoted G2 collectors having all the info about these toys, suddenly anyone with a copy of Summer’s book is going to know about every single playset, pony, accessory and whatnot from the second generation. Collectors are going to see whole sets of ponies that they didn’t even know existed before. And when they realize how cool some of these sets and ponies are, they are going to be a lot more interested in collecting them. The more people collecting something, the more it drives up prices. That is just a simple rule of supply and demand.

So, if you want my advice, whether you are a G2 collector or just an opportunistic collectibles seller, start stock piling G2 ponies now. If you are a collector, this will let you snag them for a better price before the rush of new collectors get involved. For sellers, this will let you snag ponies for less and then resell (or trade) them later for more when new G2 collectors start to drive the market up. Either way, don’t be surprised if G2 prices start to change and change drastically in the next few weeks as knowledge and interest in the generation spreads.

Now if you have a G2 collection that you were looking to sell, I’d bide my time. Once the copies of the book have had a chance to circulate, you should be able to get a better price for your items than you would have been able to get ever before and they’ll be more interest in the items overall.

But that’s just my 2 cents. . .

Summer Hayes is a literary genius.

I was planning on reading this, but first I wanted to buy a copy of The Cambridge Companion to The My Little Pony 2007-2008 Collector’s Inventory, so that I understood the manifold literary-historical allusions and the stream-of-consciousness narration.

Jürgen Habermas wrote an interesting essay on Summer Hayes’ oeuvre a few years back in which he posited My Little Pony as a forcible diminution and reappropriation of the male’s psychosexual privilege in Western culture. He further describes an orange, purple-maned, doe-eyed pony as a ‘folding-over-upon-itself’ of the traditional hegemonic phallocentric aggression we find sublimated in our modes of commerce and social exchange. He also says he likes to comb their hair and kiss them before night-night.

I’d be remiss, however, if I didn’t note that my favorite work in the Summer Hayes canon is The My Little Pony G1 Collector’s Inventory: An Unofficial Full Color Illustrated Collector’s Price Guide to the First Generation of MLP Including All US Ponies, Playsets and Accessories Released Before 1997, in which she collaborates with the highly underrated Kimberly Shriner, who succeeds in tempering some of Hayes’ most gratuitously high-modern tendencies. Also, this is the first Hayes/Shriner work to address the problematic relationship between accessories/playsets and the notion of subjective pony-selfness which has so confounded post-structuralist thought (see Foucault, for instance); what’s most interesting is that Hayes and Shriner define the All-That-Which-Is-Other-Than-My-Little-Pony as ‘accessory’ and not integral to a symbiotic exchange between subjective ideation and so-called ‘objective’ context. Many little post-equine philosophers have rightly challenged this compartmentalized view, but the Pony/Accessories paradigm offers a rather nice model for isolating a subjective notion of subjectivity itself, as demarcated, for instance, from the My Little Pony Rainbow Corral playset.

Let us not for a minute neglect that fateful modification ‘my little’ in which, firstly, ownership and, then, diminishment are asserted — which purposefully counterpoises egotism (the appropriation of Other) with an implied lacking or insufficiency (little being less than that which is regarded as the normative manifestation of a fixed
– or central — ideation); My Little Pony is therefore defined by its belongingness to or of me (or as an accessory to a grounded a priori self, which is both apart from and the cipher which enters into the strategy of poniness on my behalf) and by its devaluation according to an acknowledged standard inherited by the self from the obscure collaboration of accessory identity (or ‘Otherness’). Thus, the tension which is essential to the MLP claim to existence (or, non-ontologically, to ‘mere’ expression) always already threatens to overcome and undermine the very motivations of that claim, thereby alluding to the futility of possession and the frustrated drive aspiring to transcendent satiation.

However, that would never stop pony fans of all ages from dressing up as an MLP for Halloween! Some intrepid and crafty people have created costumes themselves and are selling them only. I’ve complied a small gallery below of some I liked.

While the ones on eBay are trying to be more like official My Little Pony figures, if you don’t mind modifying what you buy a bit, there are a wide variety of Unicorn costumes for children and adults alike. Just sew a symbol or cutie mark on and suddenly you have your very own My Little Pony costume.

After I posted the two links above, another MLP fan reminded me of this picture that made the rounds of the internet a few weeks ago (one place that has it is GeekyTattoos but it is everywhere). It is a tattoo of Wolverine riding a My Little Pony. An isolated incident, I thought at the time. But as a part of the larger picture? Hmmm…

What is it about Hugh Jackman that draws him again and again to the mythical world of My Little Pony? Is it because awesome things in the universe naturally gravitate towards each other?

I am all for the media discovering this. Heck, it only took them 25 years to notice that we were doing stuff like this so I guess I should just be happy for the exposure.

But must they overlay their own words over something there was already a perfect good name for.

They aren’t My Little Pony mash-ups.

They aren’t modded My Little Ponies.

They aren’t My Little Pony mods either.

They are customs. Custom My Little Ponies. Is this so hard, people?

Is this driving anyone else as nuts as it is driving me?

The most popular are:
  • NRFB – Never Removed From Box
  • MIB – Mint in Box
  • MOC – Mint on Card
  • NWT – New with Tags (mostly used for clothing or dolls that did not come in packaging)
  • NIP – New in Package (this term is newer than the rest and is only recently coming into popularity)

There are also a wide variety of mash-ups of the terms above where the user tries to jam two of the acronyms above together so you get things like NRFC (Never Removed From Card), MIC (Mint in Card) or NWOT (New WithOut Tags). You will also sometimes see things like NMIB which means that the item is Near or Not Mint in Box.

As a buyer, you don’t want to actually put these terms into your search because there is a such a wide variety of ways people use these but it is helpful to know what they stand form when you encounter them. As always, make sure that you read the seller’s description fully before buying as their title may not agree with their description.

As a seller, when deciding which one to use in your description, go for the most commonly used term for your sort of item.

Jamie Oliver, best known as TV’s The Naked Chef, just named his most recent daughter (born on April 3rd, 2009) Petal Blossom Rainbow Oliver. Never mind how incredibly awesome this name is, the bigger question is why aren’t Poppy Honey and Daisy Boo, the names of his other two daughters, also My Little Pony names?

So my question for the community at large is, if you were going to name your child after a My Little Pony, which one would you name it after?

Secondly, if there were ponies named Poppy Honey and Daisy Boo, what would they look like?

Oh and if you don’t remember what the MLP Petal Blossom looked like in the first place, there were actually two Petal Blossoms, one was a G2 and one was a G3. Both, oddly enough, were purple with pink hair. Look at both Petal Blossom versions here to jog your memory.

Let us save you the trouble of looking this up.

My Little Pony (#47227)
Pre-1990 (#375)
1990-Now (#47228)

Now the main category, #47227 is helpful to know but you cannot list any item directly in that category. The eBay listing tool forces you to select a secondary category which would be one of the two others.

Unfortunately, eBay’s definition of vintage means that an item must be at least 20 years old which is why their older pony category falls in the middle of a pony generation. Most eBay users ignore the 1990 cut-off date and use #375 for all First Generation ponies (which are ponies released before 1997) and #47228 for all ponies released after 1997 (which includes the Second and Third Generations).

When listing your MLP item, instead of browsing for the category, you can save time by simply copy and pasting the category number you need from above.

Let us clear this up for you. OOAK stands for One Of a Kind and usually refers to custom creations.

These are ponies that have been reborn by a pony artist (customizer) into a totally new pony. Since this new creation is the only one around of her type, she is one of a kind!

Unfortunately, some confused eBay sellers have gotten the mistaken impression that OOAK just means “rare” and will use it on a store bought pony so be sure to read the description before buying so that you know what you are getting.

Now, MLP fans aren’t the only ones with customs and OOAK creations. Barbie, G I Joe and other toys have also sparked the imagination of customizers around the world.

If you want to see some lovely artwork, search for OOAK in eBay categories like Fantasy, Barbie or My Little Pony. Maybe you’ll become inspired to create some OOAK items of your own.

Unfortunately, some sellers have confused this term with “played with” and list all used ponies as custom bait so be sure to look at the listing to make sure you know what you are getting. Some ponies listed as custom bait need only simply cleaning or repair while true custom bait are beyond saving.

Ponies that are custom bait are beyond cleaning or repair and may include flaws such as:

  • Dirt, marks or other stains or discoloration that cannot be removed
  • Heavy haircuts or missing a tail (though, as more and more collectors become skilled in re-hairing, trimmed hair often does not count a pony out)
  • Missing and/or broken “special feature”
  • Holes, chew marks and scratches on pony’s body

The term custom bait originated because customizers seek out ponies in very poor condition to repaint, rehair or otherwise re-create them into entirely new pony figures called customs.

Custom bait ponies can vary in value based on pose and other features. As a general rule of thumb, Big Brother ponies and earlier poses are usually the most desirable as custom bait.
