2012 Convention & SDCC Exclusive My Little Pony is (gasp) NOT named Derpy

My Little Pony fans, especially fans of Friendship is Magic, went wild when they saw 2012’s convention exclusive pony. Attendees of the My Little Pony Fair Collector’s Convention and the San Diego Comic Convention (also referred to as SDCC or just Comic Con), got an exclusive chance to snag this pony:

The wonky eyes. The bubble cutie mark. The muffins. Surely this is the character FiM fans have dubbed Derpy Hooves (sometimes known as Ditzy Doo)?

While fans of the show  may know her as Derpy in their hearts, this pony is still controversial and Hasbro and the Hub both seem to want distance from the fan given name. As a result, this 2012 exclusive pony, like many of the exclusive ponies of the past, is officially unnamed. Will she remain nameless for all time or will Hasbro eventually settle on an official name for this brony favorite?

For now, she’s joined the ranks of ponies officially named one thing, but commonly called another by collectors.

Did you manage to snag your very own Derpy, er, I mean, 2012 Convention Exclusive My Little Pony this year? If you haven’t snagged one yet, there are plenty up for grabs already on eBay.

How My Little Pony toys are named & how Hasbro snuck the name Waterfire in under the radar

At the 2008 My Little Pony Fair, some of the MLP team were kind enough to talk to us about some of the details that go into making any MLP toy a reality. At the time, collectors were concerned why some G3 ponies had changed names between waves of the toys and the discussion of this lead to some interesting insights into how My Little Pony toys get their names. I’m going to try to recap this info as best as I can but someone may have a video of this discussion up on YouTube somewhere if you want the whole thing from the source. Continue reading

Vintage My Little Pony fans and collectors welcome at Everfree Aug 17-19, 2012

With so many of the meet-ups and other fan gatherings geared specifically bronies, I wanted to highlight some of the events geared at least partially towards us vintage fans and collectors. Steven is here to tell you a little about EverFree, an informal fan gathering coming this summer for collectors and bronies alike. Are you running a meet-up or other fan gathering for vintage fans this year? Please contact me so that we can highlight it on the site.

So far we have several events for pre-Friendship is Magic fans. The first is The History of MLP, which is a lecture on the history of My Little Pony, moving into a compare/contrast of the various generations (Does G1 have more pink? Are there more “baddies” in FiM?). Next we’ll be holding a ‘Trading Post’ panel for collectors who wish to bring extras to trade for other toys they’re looking for. There also are plans in the works to have panels on pony customizing and care of pony toys which will be announced soon. Finally, Saturday Night we will be holding a ‘Grand Galloping Gala’ dance with music from all generations of the shows and movies, and the dance itself will be a Cosplay Masquarade & Formal Ball for everyone to be able to dress up! We also are open to additional programming and panels for our pre-G4 fellow fans, and those interested in hosting such panels can e-mail us at: events@everfreenw.com

If you require accommodation during your stay in Seattle, please be sure to take advantage of our special convention room rate with the code “MLP” when registering for your hotel room with the SeaTac Airport Holiday Inn. This rate also includes complimentary buffet breakfast for two adults per morning, per room, as well as free breakfast buffets for all children 12 and under! Also, we’re pleased to announce our charity for our first year is Seattle Children’s Hospital. (NOTE: If your registration includes the night of Thursday, August 16th, you MUST choose a single. My Little Pony in the NYT, Friendship is Magic episodes taken down, BronyCon recap & more

As you’ve probably noticed, I’m frantically trying to catch up on all the things that happened in the Ponyverse over the holidays. To keep it simple for myself, this post is going to be a bit of compilation of stuff I didn’t get to blog about as it happened.

BronyCon 2012 – Here’s some coverage of these Friendship is Magic fan conventions happening all over the country

The New York Times had to issue a retraction about a My Little Pony detail… hilarity ensued.
After seemingly not caring about episodes of the show on the web, Hasbro suddenly started taking the videos down. Could this be related to the new DVD release? Or would they just rather we buy from iTunes?

Someone compiled a census of pony fans: Brony Census Tracks ‘State of the Herd’

Whew… OK… so what other big stories did I miss?
