CNN: ‘My Little Pony’ Goes Geek

With all the Friendship is Magic stuff around, I was excited to see these two winter hats at my local Hot Topic (they sadly don’t have them available on the website, you’ll have to hunt for them). My husband took the pictures without my supervision which is why you aren’t getting to see the cute little tassels or the fact that the tag has really awesome vintage artwork from the second set of Twice-As-Fancy ponies. (It’s so hard to find good help these days.) But they are really cute… you’ll have to take my word for it.

The only part that’s a bit confusing is that, while the pink hat is clearly Sundance the second hat is the same coloring as Sundance but with hearts on her rump. Is she an albino Peachy or Snuzzle? An international variant? Your guess is as good as mine.

Anyway, for those of you that prefer the retro look, it’s a little something to consider asking Santa for this year…

This is currently the only vintage MLP design that they offer but, never fear! In the same email, they confirmed that vintage and retro inspired designs are welcome in their new T-shirt design contest despite how it may look. That means vintage fans have a chance at the big money prizes and in seeing their designs on a shirt so get submitting!

Of course, the best way to ensure they’ll make more retro and vintage pony inspired designs is to vote with your wallet!

The good news is that MightyFine is having another My Little Pony T-shirt contest and the prizes are huge! Lots of money to be won and the pot gets bigger the more people enter so start designing!

Now for the bad news… it seems like this contest is for Bronies and Friendship is Magic fans only. Both of the judges are from Brony and Friendship is Magic fan sites. Couple this with the fact that they still haven’t added adult sizes for their Retro My Little Pony shirt and this doesn’t mean great things for vintage MLP fans. While they don’t specifically prohibit submitting vintage MLP designs, how can they possibly win if the judges are only fans of the new stuff?

I love the new show as much as anypony but I’m a little mystified why they’re excluding the original fandom in such a big way like this. As someone who loves ponies new and old, I want to celebrate all of ponydom, not just the new stuff. I know this is a case of the squeaky wheel getting the grease because Friendship is Magic is getting a ton of press but I’m starting to get a little annoyed that it’s become an either/or thing. If MightyFine isn’t willing to make retro merchandise, can’t they at least sell that license to a company that is? It feels like squatting.

You can be a fan of both Friendship is Magic and the original MLP content. Or you can just be a fan of Friendship is Magic or just a fan of the vintage stuff. There is no “right” or “wrong” way to be an MLP fan. One isn’t better than the other, it’s just different. The fans “taking sides” is annoying enough but to have the companies holding the license to make merchandise taking sides seems like a new level of slight.

I don’t want this to deter anyone from submitting designs to the contest because I still want there to be awesome FiM designs out there and I want one of you to win that nice big prize. I just wish people weren’t trying to make this a fandom Civil War.

Inspired by “My Little Pony Friendship is Magic,” the Hasbro Studios TV show airing on The Hub, products in the Canterlot section will include bedding, costumes, books, t-shirts, arts and crafts, activity sets and exclusive toys based on characters Princess Celestia, her sister Princess Luna and Twilight Sparkle.

“This summer, fans of the My Little Pony Friendship is Magic television show, can embark on their own Canterlot adventure at Target,” says Stephanie Lucy, vice president of merchandising, Target. “We expect that Target’s exclusive merchandise will have My Little Pony followers mesmerized.”

Here’s what we know so far for sure

• It’s called Canterlot
• It’s themed around the My Little Pony Friendship is Magic animated television show
• It’s exclusive to Target
• Products will run the gamut from t-shirts to bedding and books
• Some target stores have already put the displays out in stores while some are planning them for the next few weeks

Other than the fact that the Seth Green apparently actually had a meeting with Hasbro about making a real line of My Little Pony Apocalypse action figures (it ain’t happening in this lifetime), there was no real information in this panel.

I really kinda wish we could have sat in on that meeting…

Update! @theliz13 just tipped me off to the fact that Seth Green posted pictures of the actual prototypes of the ponies he showed to Hasbro back in December of 2010 to his Twitter. Check em out below!

Well, in one of those, the internet is wonderful moments, I was contacted by the culprit behind the cute that you see above! Turns out, the photo above was taken by one of our own, namely Ianthe99 (aka Amber) of the MLPTP. I asked her if she’d be willing to give us a little “behind the scenes” info about both the photo and how it ended up in the calendar and she was kind enough to agree.

AND, because she’s extra awesome, she also gave us a few more pictures from that same day which you can see after the interview below.

OK, I gotta ask: what was going on when you snapped that photo?

Well, I was rearranging my pony collection. I was getting ready to put all of my gem G3′s on a separate shelf. So I pretty much just took them all and dumped them on the couch. Next thing I look over, Biscuit has curled up right in the middle with them… so out comes the camera. I got lucky and was able to sneak one under her paw.

How did it end up in the Cute Overload calendar?

If I remember right, I posted it to a Livejournal community dedicated to cute cat pictures. People kept telling me I should submit it to Cute Overload..so I did. She wound up on the site. Then, a while later, someone from the site contacted me and told me they were using it for the calendar, and asked me if I would like a copy! It was pretty neat!

Do you remember what other ponies were in attendance that day?

Only ones I can remember are the ones I can pick out of the pictures. It’s pretty much most of the gem g3′s. I think I was missing a birthstone or two and Silver Lining at the time. Here’s a list.

They’ve since updated their catalog so that now (almost) all the MLP shirts are available in adult sizes for both men and women! Many shirts are also offered in sizes up to 3X! Wooohooo!

That said, many shirts are still not available in adult sizes. One of these is, maddeningly, the Retro shirt that most of you have expressed the most interest in. I have two different emails into the company to see if they’ll be releasing it in adult sizes soon and haven’t gotten an answer yet but I will let you know when I do. But, in the meantime, lots of FiM goodness to be had so go nuts!

Which design is your favorite?

Today is the day we had previously announced that voting would commence on our My Little Pony t-shirt design contest. We had originally hoped to have all of our submissions ready for voting at this time. However, we were overwhelmed by the dedication, love, and sheer number of submissions we received for this contest. The fans REALLY outdid themselves!

Our current module was not built to handle as many entries as we received. So the short explanation for why voting isn’t ready to rock and roll yet is that we are in the process of rebuilding a new module that can handle a whole lot more choices for you to select from as we narrow down the field toward our big winners.

There is some additional GREAT news to impart, despite the voting process still being pending, however!:

• First of all, we are extending the submission period until July 18th! So you have nearly two more weeks to get your entries in, and those of you who missed the deadline last Friday can still get in on the action.
• By the end of this week, our module will be ready to go. Even if you have already emailed your designs in, you will need to upload them directly to the web module once it is live, however it is super-easy and will only take a few seconds. Also, we’re asking that everyoneplease submit no more than five designs.
• Most importantly, we have SERIOUSLY improved the prizes!: Our grand prize winner will now take home $1000 in cash! The four runner ups will receive a $50 gift coupon to welovefine.com.
• Voting will now begin on July 22nd, after the submission period ends and we review all of the entered designs; we will then tally votes for the winners until August 14th. Votes collected on the website will be calculated in tandem with our internal selection process; the combined results will determine our five winners.

We appreciate your patience as we tweak this contest to make sure it is everything it should be, to match the enormous enthusiasm you have all shown for MLP and for our site. We will post updates ASAP to let you know when the all-new web based module is ready to accept entries!

This is especially good news for those of us going to the MLP Convention this weekend as we’ll actually have time to enter once we get back! Will you be entering now that the prize has increased?

But I don’t want the New! Shiny! aspect of FiM to mean that none of the licensing goes towards the retro and vintage style shirts many of us love. How can we make sure that the older ponies aren’t totally ignored in favor of Friendship is Magic style shirts?

There’s two things we vintage fans can do to make sure we aren’t totally forgotten. 

1. Support the vintage products already out there! Mighty Fine has already put out a new retro style shirt pictured here and 80s Tees has several really cool retro style shirts here. If the vintage products sell, they’ll keep making more. It’s as simple as that!
2. Submit retro style designs and vintage themed shirts to the WeLoveFine contest. They’ve already shown that they are willing to remember the original fandom with the shirt to the right so it’s one of our best chances to get the shirts we’d love to see made. You can see the submissions that they’ve gotten so far, they are very FiM heavy. Let’s get some retro designs in there.
